Introducing our Storage Project Sales Director: An Interview


SEC Storage is delighted to announce the appointment of our new storage Project Sales Director, Gary Kirk. The appointment comes with a change of focus for the warehouse storage systems division of the SEC Group.

The Interview: Find out more about Gary Kirk

Having been with SEC Storage since June 2000, we thought we'd find out what this role entails, how Gary got into the industry and more from the man self-proclaimed as SEC through and through.



How did you get into the warehouse storage industry?

Way back in 1988 my first job within the industry was as an installer, working all round the country installing pallet racking, shelving and mezzanine floors and other storage systems. After a couple of years I progressed to be a lead installer for a racking installation company and remained "on the tools" for nearly 10 years.



When did the move from installer to sales happen?

The camaraderie on site and time-away staying in hotels was a lot of fun as a young man, however when I first met my wife, I decided I wanted to try a new career and applied for a job at Linpac Storage Systems. I was successful in obtaining the position as a Territory Salesman.



When was the move to SEC Storage?

After 3 years at Linpac, I was approached by SEC and offered a role that was more than just selling pallet racking and shelving. It was a role that provided the opportunity to offer clients a full turnkey solution based on their operational requirements and not just on a portfolio of product types. The new role also gave me the opportunity to progress my career and in 2003 I became Storage Sales Manager and was responsible for overseeing all of the territory storage sales.



In the last 16 years, what are some of your favourite projects?

That's a tough question. For every project we approach it with no pre-conceptions of what the solution should be, meaning every installation is truly client focused, however one of my first major successes came back in 2007 - 2008, at the height of the economic downturn. We managed to secure the fit-out of Domino's Pizza UK & Ireland Ltd new commissary in Milton Keynes. This was a great achievement for SEC Storage, and one of the first major brand names we completed works for.


One of the best has to be our SHD Logistics Award winning project for Kuehne + Nagel Ltd and their client, Ben Sherman Group Ltd. We helped increase efficiencies and reduce cost, whilst delivering a significant project 2 weeks ahead of schedule.


One of the most interesting was our vast carpet racking installation for Designer Contracts Ltd in Kettering. This had the ability to accommodate over 7,000 rolls of carpet on racks over 10 metres deep.

What does this new role Project Sales Director mean for you and SEC Storage?

We have always been highly commended and received good feedback from our clients following the completion of turnkey installations; we know we do this very well! This new role will enable the company to focus on developing and designing schemes for all types of warehouses that require a full turnkey package.


This is to ultimately enable us to provide a greater service to our clients. These projects are about much more than frames and beams. We have to add value and in doing so it requires greater detail. This role now enables me to really immerse myself in the project on a consultative basis, truly understanding the clients operation to determine the right solution.



What type of warehouse racking projects will you be involved in?

This new role will focus on developing opportunities and working with clients on projects which entail large scale installations, or complexity. This could be anything from a carpet racking installation such as that for Designer Contracts Ltd, or a multi-tier picking system including conveyors, lighting and fire detection or prevention. We'll be able to assist clients right from the initial planning stages prior to signing for a building, right up to project sign-off including Building Regulations approval.


It is really important to be involved in the infancy of a project, in order to determine the right solution. SEC Storage isn't just a racking company, we're a company that works in a consultative way, all on a speculative basis.
