Extension of the existing multi-tier structure
In order to fulfil their ever developing business and storage distribution needs, Essentra plc, who had previously worked with SEC on the construction of an impressive multi-tier structure, needed an intelligent solution to maximise developing storage requirements. To begin, SEC conducted an extensive warehouse analysis, discussing how best to optimise the multi-tier structure. It was found that staff members were using on estimate, around 20% of their shift time waiting for the elevator to arrive; the primary form of goods transportation across the floors.
It was also found that the company's VNA pallet racking, due to it's restrictive aisle size would only permit one person down the aisle at any one time, making stock checks a rather timely endeavour. Coupled with the yearly rental costs of the VNA forklift trucks, this proved to be a rather expensive system concerning both time and money.
A reduction in operating cost and an increase in picker productivity
SEC found a solution that enabled the extension of the existing multi-tier picking structure into the VNA racking system. This increased picking capacity within the existing multi-tier whilst saving time and expenditure - negating the need for new materials.
To maximise product distribution and reduce elevator waiting times the solution was to incorporate a multi-level, automated conveyor system complete with intelligence to service the floors on one end (going up), and a spiral goods chute for distribution of product at the other end (going down). This automated conveyor system has a 400mm slat belt for the handling of specified Tote box sizes. The connection bridges assist with the flow of product from the process area; swing arm diverts then distribute the product to various floors, and gravity rollers with weight sensors force the system to shut off when there is an overload.
This redistribution of space has allowed Essentra to expand overall storage capacity, greatly saving on lost employee waiting time and needless operational expenditure.
