Bespoke cantilever racking solution increases capacity
Payne Worldwide are a supplier of a range of plastic laminates and other media to the print industry. Based in Banbury, Oxfordshire, they recently decided that they needed to increase their current stock holding capacity. In addition to this they identified a need to improve their current handling method to allow improved accessibility to all their lines as well as to cut down on the amount of product damage. Having established that they needed more than just additional racking, Payne asked The Storage Equipment Centre Ltd to work with them to provide a definitive solution which met all of their needs.

The client brief
When Payne originally approached SEC the brief they gave for their required solution involved using a fork truck, which employed a boom for picking up each roll using a central tubular opening. This system would have still allowed the potential for damage and did not allow for the best use of the available space.

During these early meetings SEC suggest alternative solutions and quickly demonstrated that they understood the needs of their business. This process continued with more detailed discussions on the design and SEC again provided their expert advice and experience to provide a bespoke solution to meet the needs of Payne’s operation. The solution involved using Racks with Cantilever arms to hold individual rolls of laminate. These arms would be tubular and would have rounded “bull nosed” ends to reduce the incidence of damage to the product as well as making roll placement easier and quicker. The rolls were also stored so that alternate columns were staggered to provide an interlocking layout. This enabled the final solution to provide a significant improvement in the storage capacity of rolls.

SEC then provided Payne with detailed CAD drawings as well as full colour 3D rendered pictures which allowed the client to fully appreciate the proposed solution. SEC also worked closely with Payne’s chosen fork truck supplier to ensure the whole solution was workable once installed.

Achieving the brief - a satisfied customer
Having agreed the ideal solution, Payne then asked SEC to supply the complete Cantilever Racking installation.Once again the client was delighted with the way that SEC’s Contract Manager ensured the project was put to site with minimal disruption to their own day to day business with no delay to the agreed programme.

Stuart John, Production Manager commented “We were delighted with the way SEC took the time to understand our business and offer a solution which exactly met our needs. They also made sure that when they installed the racks their own installers worked in a way which minimised the impact on our operation.”

The finished storage solution now allows Payne to store substantially more rolls than was possible with their previous storage method. Manual handling problems have been eliminated and individual roll selectivity is at 100%. Product damage has been significantly reduced and the time for retrieval of individual rolls has also been hugely reduced.
